In the upcoming Div1+Div2 contest, BenQ is participating with ~3800 rating, although he's not on the Top Rated list on CF. How and why is that?

Hey,
I was interested in how rating changes on Codeforces due to having an interesting circumstance yesterday — I participated in Div.4 contest(30 Aug) and got +137 rating. My previous rating was 1283, now it is 1420. After that, I accidentally found another user who got +188 rating. His previous score was 1289.
The part I don't understand is how Codeforces distributes scores, since I placed 333rd and he/she placed 394th, yet he received more rating than me while I was ahead on the scoreboard.
No offence to that or any other guy. I just want to know how the score distribution works; Thanks!
EDIT: I'm not sure why am I being downvoted for, but I found out it's caused by 'newcomers to codeforces' system, explained here
