Contest itself conducted using ACM ICPC format. Everyone is eligible (it is a team contest), but you can't participate from just anywhere, someone (usually coaches from university) should organize "sector", where people come to paricipate

So what about the alumni? I see many of x-acm contestants also participate. Does that mean they go to the "sector" to participate? By sector, I am understanding hosting it in a lab. Correct me if my understanding is wrong. Thanks.

Generally speaking yes, through sometimes there are sectors in Yandex. Also some highly trusted teams participate in their own sectors

Some do, some do not: after discussion with some of organizers some teams are allowed to participate without being on-site.

I think you can easily host a 'sector' in your university lab, office or something like this.

Ah that's cool. How many rounds are there left this year? Also, who should we contact to set up a sector? :)

So if I want to participate from my college room, will I have to create a new sector for that, or do I talk to an organizer of an existing sector to allow me to participate without coming onsite?

I guess your dorm room cannot be a sector (unless there is better alternative around), so you should go to existing sector.

I don't think there are any sectors in India (none that I know of at least). Thanks a lot though.

Is there any place where I can view old problems and editorials, and make submissions after contest ends?

There isn't any publicily available. I guess you can ask snarknews anyway. I personally always enjoyed extra teams in the monitor :)

Please, let others know how one can compete in case no sector exists for him/her.

I tried following your advice and contacting snarknews but there has not been any reply so far. Is there some place where I can find list of sectors so that I can see if there is any near me.

Unluckly, no sectors are registered for India for now; so coach of your university may ask to register one.

Better throw away all these sectors and make free and open registration.

With "student" teams of 20 players and so on?

Playing outside sectors is acceptable for post-ACM teams (and here is such a rule, teams from "external" sector), but for ACM eligible teams sectors are compromise between online contest and onsite one.

BTW, if your team is post-ACM for now (and as far as i know it is), you may re-register in "external" sector.

I'm not speaking about me and my team, we can get the account if we want. The thing is that sectors cause many troubles to new teams. There wouldn't be messages "guys, how to participate in opencup, help me" if you made the contests open for everyone.

New teams are training somewhere, so they can find if their university joined OpenCup, if not, they may form an OpenCup sector (with coach as coordinator, of, if coach is in fact inactive, even with student as coordinator — we already have several examples). Then other teams may join and we will have more or less functional sector.
