Hi to CF community!!! Gaming can seriously boost your programming skills. It sharpens problem-solving and logical thinking, as many games require critical strategies and quick decision-making. Games like "Portal" or "StarCraft" teach you to approach challenges analytically, while creative games like "Minecraft" enhance your design thinking. Multiplayer games improve teamwork and communication, essential in coding projects. Plus, the persistence you develop from failing and trying again in games translates well to debugging code. Ultimately, gaming isn't just fun; it can make you a better programmer. So next time you game, know you're leveling up your coding skills too!

I've tried gaming and all it did was waste a few hundred hours of my time

only thing it can change is your mood, which may help you think a bit better, but generally, you are objectively wrong

You are actually correct to some extent. Gaming has been shown to increase IQ just by a little bit.

The impact is only negative. I am Immortal rank in Dota after spending over 10,000 hours. I also am quite high level in RTS games like StarCraft II. But because I invested all that time into gaming and not programming and doing more math, the result is that my programming and mathematical problem solving skills are low level.

I don't think the poster means that spending 10000 hours will make you god, he just means that playing games for sensible amounts of time will give you some skills that might benefit you

The point is that any time invested in gaming could have been spent in/on something else whose net positive benefit would outweigh any positive benefit that gaming brought to programming skills. Thus, in my perspective that considers opportunity cost, the impact of gaming is only negative.

You could write a similar blog post about an infinite amount of topics and somehow argue it brings some benefit to programming skills. ChatGPT would would have no trouble generating an argument for each hypothetical topic as it did for the poster in regards to gaming.

I believe gaming sure does boost your programming skills, provided that the gamers are Alice and Bob :)
