A master's degree is like about a 2 year course, the scholarship stands for 1 year only. Why is that ?

This is not a scam. I have been part of Harbour Space University since July 2020. The 125 euros is an application fee. If you are offered full scholarship you will get the aforementioned benefits. Even if you are not selected for the scholarship, you will get a chance to take any of the module courses in Harbour Space University. And trust me, the classes will be amazing. And to tell about the 1 year scholarship, basically Harbour University implements the module based learning. You will choose the course to study where you have to complement several modules each having at least 3 hours of class. This scholarship scheme is for one year and you need to apply again to further your scholarship.

Once in a lifetime opportunity to have session with great instructors and learn directly from them.

I was a student before joining the University’s Comms department. Before getting to know the university firsthand, I was also a bit skeptical as to how the university makes money, how legit the opportunities they offer are, and what kind of education you get for the price. 3 years into the project, I’m a big believer in the university’s mission, and I hope I can help clear up some of the thoughts & questions you guys are having.

Harbour.Space is a university with two primary purposes — to give talent from all over the world the opportunity of top quality higher education, and to help connect that talent with some of the best companies on the planet, so that they can develop the skills and network they need to change the world and to help others around them get the same opportunity to grow. Just to clarify, our application fees do not go towards funding the scholarships! The reason we have the fee is simple — we’re a very inclusive university, and offer all kinds of opportunities to students from anywhere in the world who might not have the formal prerequisites (grades, test scores, background in an expensive university/prestigious company) that are required to get into other “top” universities. We don’t believe in that. We believe in talent and hard work. However, when you lower the “formal” entry barriers, you will get a lot of applicants who aren’t serious about studying here and just want to try their luck. We’re a small team (the university is a startup, after all), and we don’t have the resources nor the time to scan through thousands of resumes a month. The application fee is just one small way for us to see who is serious about studying at our university, that’s all.

Our scholarships are funded by us and through partnerships with companies from the industry. No government funding, no grants. We know there’s a shortage of tech talent in the workforce today, and we know that there are extremely talented young people who just don’t have a chance to prove themselves or to attend a traditional “top” university because of the conditions they were born into (visa/immigration issues, financial barriers, geographic location, etc). So, we partner with companies who are looking for talented individuals (in this case, a Senior Full-Stack Developer), and do our best to locate the best talent worldwide that can study at our university and work for the company. That way, we empower young talent to develop the skills they need through our courses, to get the experience required by working at the company, and the company gets a dynamic, next-gen rising star that will help push their project forward. It’s a win-win. Finally, the way we teach is very different — I saw a comment that says studying a masters is a waste of time, and while I don’t entirely agree with that, there is some truth to it. The fact is, a theoretical, traditional masters degree in a technical discipline is not the most efficient way to to prepare for the future anymore — this is actually what led the founders to create a hands on, tech-oriented university completely different to what we knew universities to be until now. So different in fact, that it almost doesn’t seem real (fun fact: I didn’t believe the uni was the real deal when I applied and was accepted. My dad and I flew to Barcelona just to make sure it existed).

At Harbour.Space, we don’t do theory, and you don’t learn by memorizing facts. One of my favorite quotes says spoonfeeding doesn’t teach you to eat — it only teaches you the shape of the spoon. As I said before, we are not a university caught up in formal requirements — you don’t memorize things just to parrot them out during the exam and then to forget them. The only skill that develops is how to quickly memorize things, and in an age where you have the world’s information at your fingertips, that’s not the most useful skill to have, is it? When you study here, you learn by doing, you create experiences, and you have the freedom to develop yourself as you wish, because that kind of freedom and empowerment is what education means to us. So, in that sense, it’s almost not a master’s at all — think of it as a 1-2 year, guided skill/experience accelerator. I know we post a lot of stuff here and we maybe haven’t really gotten to know you guys very well, and I apologize for that! We really value the Codeforces community, and believe it’s one of the most talented groups of young people around. I genuinely believe many of you will become the next generation of leaders in the tech world. I say this because I had classmates who came from Codeforces and are now working at Google. All Harbour.Space is trying to do is to help you get there. No scams, no bs.

I'm able to understand people who dislike private universities but I don't see how this is a scam. There's a good reason that they can't process so many applications. And 125€ is 0.5% of standard yearly tuition, it's like a non-refundable payment for just 1.5 days. It isn't a lot if you want to study there. In comparison, Polish universities have a 20€ application fee even though Poland is generally cheaper than Spain, and the acceptance is mostly automatic (based on a-exam results), no need for huge manpower.

What I would like to see is a refund in cases when you're accepted but they "can't find sponsors for you" like in rotavirus's situation. If the university offers some scholarship/apprenticeship and can't fulfill the offer, that's an obvious reason for a full refund.

Guys, please stop downvoting, otherwise Harbour space may stop sponsoring the lovely awoo's educational rounds, and that would be a shame.

Application fee for univ are quite common. A quick GG search resulted in following:

• Harvard application fee: $75
• MIT application fee: $75
• Stanford application fee: $90

Sure the fee in this case is quite expensive, but it's not an unusual thing.
