I wonder how come I never heard of IOI in school O.o . I guess its because my school was shit. Teachers never told us anything about it. How do students like you come to know? Did you just happen to find out on your own, or did someone tell you? I feel like I missed the biggest jackpot of my life because I didn't buy a ticket.
One my friends told me. My school is considered to be a relatively good one in the area and the CS teacher doesn't know about USACO/IOI. Or maybe he knows, but he doesn't think it's worth informing people who are having trouble with APCS about the IOI.
Competitive programming is the least useful sport or what >.< If teachers don't even know about it!!! Stupid teachers, repeating whatever is in books. If I could do life all over again, I'll be born in a better country where at least teachers know their shit. This is a pure treasure hunt for students finders participators lol how lame
Every year schools ask 10th graders if they want to participate in one of 5 subjects, maths — physics — chemistry — biology — informatics. When I participated I didn't know anything about programming and I thought informatics was all about making powerpoint presentations, formatting laptops and such stuff. :D First few rounds were only IQ tests, and only the last round was really about competitive programming and I started solving problems only two weeks before it. The number of skilled participants in my country is reaaally low. First 10 places of 10th graders advance to the training camp, and all the newcomers from this year (I'm currently at 11th grade) are gray on codeforces. I think Syria is like heaven for those who dream of qualifying to IOI. :D

I remember something very similar happening in my school
*10th graders were told today is an exam. Read first page, and it said IMO * and it was shit stupid, like a silly IQ test. Solve puzzles find next element in patterns, basic maths problems,etc. I thought lol, anybody can clear this, and so did everyone else as far as I can tell. Nobody took it seriously! It was like that pop quiz which won't get graded. Not even the teachers knew about this. It just happened! IOI nope, never heard of it. Only IMO. I mean, we didn't even have internet back then, to find stuff on our own. You say Syria is gold for getting into IOI? Well, here if you know what IOI is, you'll get in. I hope things have changed now, but I still don't see anybody from my school on codeforces!!
Ok, it was kind of our own fault to some extent. We saw the word International and didn't take it seriously. The word International should've meant something to us. lol
Nobody takes olympiads seriously here either, and so my life changed by accident :D

Not that now anyone in my school takes olympiads seriously. They all think that I'm wasting my time on something stupid and that my future is going to be a failure for not taking school too seriously. :3
I worked 14 hours a day for my competitive exams on regular days, and 16 hours on days I felt my future is going to be a failure. Now that I am in a university, I wish I did some programming because I could've easily given 2-3 hours to it everyday if I knew!
