Problem

We are glad to propose to you an exciting challenge “Accuracy-preserving summation algorithm”, which is prepared by Huawei Computing Product Line.

With this challenge, we focus on summation algorithms of floating point numbers in different precisions with the goal to use the lowest possible precision without losing too much of the accuracy of the end result. This problem arises in high-performance computing as lower precision can be computed faster. At the same time it also loses accuracy faster and can even lose it completely. Finding the right balance between fast low precision calculations and higher precision intermediate summations is a challenging task on modern architectures, and you would have an opportunity to try addressing this challenge

We are glad to propose to you an exciting challenge “Deterministic Scheduling for Extended Reality over 5G and Beyond”, which is prepared by Huawei Wireless Product Line.

In this contest, we focus on a XR-service scheduling problem to maximize the total number of successfully transformed XR-data frames under specific transmission requirements. Extended reality (XR) is an umbrella term for different types of realities such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR), which can provide people with immersive experience. To achieve better user-experience, scheduling algorithm should be proposed to efficiently utilize the limited radio resources, e.g., time resource, frequency resource, and power resource. Due to several practical constraints, the scheduling task is a typical NP-hard problem.

We hope you'll enjoy this complex yet very exciting Challenge!

Problem

This time we’re delighted to provide you with a new challenging problem from Huawei — Buffer Sharing in Multi-Tenant Database Environment, which is prepared by Huawei 2012 Labs and Huawei Cloud Computing.

Nowadays everyone uses databases directly or indirectly. For example, databases of service providers store shopping records, transaction records, or ticket purchase records. During this challenge, you will work with the multi-tenant database, in which a single database instance is divided into multiple virtual sub-databases, serving different tenants of cloud service.

In such databases, different tenants need to be isolated from each other to prevent services from affecting each other. Therefore, buffer is considered as an important resource for management of large amount of data. When the amount of data in the database buffer reaches the maximum value, the database buffer evicts some data from the memory based on the eviction algorithm and loads new data pages from the disk. Your goal is to optimize sharing and isolation of database buffers in the multi-tenant database. While replacement algorithms considered in this contest be one of the core algorithms, we believe there are multiple approaches one can try here, and some crossover of the algorithms will also increase your chances to win!

This time HUAWEI has prepared 2 challenging tasks for you from different business domains – Central Software Institute and HiSilicon. You are free to choose which problem you would like to solve, and you are also welcome to solve both problems, but please remember the total runtime of both rounds, which start simultaneously, is 14 days only. We hope you'll enjoy this complex yet very exciting Challenge!

Each problem will have own scoreboard and own prize fund, so this is a unique chance for you to win double prize for two solved problems!

Problem No 1: Parameterized Branch Instruction Stream Generation

Benchmarks are popular for estimating and comparing the performance of computer systems which has always been a challenging task faced by computer architects and researchers. However, it is known that as emerging applications evolve, benchmark characteristics drift with time and an optimal design using benchmarks of today may not be optimal for applications of tomorrow. This problem has been aptly described as: “Designing tomorrow’s microprocessors using today’s benchmarks built from yesterday’s programs”. One of the approaches for addressing these challenges is to complement application benchmark suites with synthetic benchmarks.

Program control flow generation algorithm is one of the most difficult questions for synthetic benchmarks. Hence, this problem focuses on generating program control flow for synthetic benchmarks based on MIC related to behavior of conditional branch instructions. In this question, program control flow generation is abstracted to draw a route on a directed graph. The route and the graph with MIC closest to the input will be the winner.

Problem No 2: Task Scheduling and Data Assignment

This is a problem about job scheduling and data assignment. Consider a scenario, where we want to run a complicated software project, on a computing cluster or on a multi-core heterogeneous computing chip. The computing cluster has multiple computing units of various computing power, as well as multiple memory disks with various reading and writing speed. The software project consists of many small computing tasks with inter-dependence among them. During the execution, these tasks will also produce data that need to be stores onto some memory disks. Our goal is to design an efficient task scheduling algorithm, that is able to assign the tasks to different computing units, and to store the data to different memory disks, such that the overall makespan, which is the time the finish the last task, is minimized. As you can imagine, usually when a task starts its execution, it needs to first read the necessary data from the memory disks, and when the computation completes, it will then write its own data to some memory disk for other tasks to read. This means, the schedule of tasks to computing units, and the assignment of data to memory disks are tightly connected to each other, and they will together decide the overall running time of the whole software project.

Hello, Codeforces!

We are happy to invite you to an exciting online event: ICPC 2022 Online Challenge powered by HUAWEI,which will start on September 15, 2022, 00:00 UTC (UTC+0).

In this Challenge, you will have a unique chance:

  • to compete for 2 weeks online during the challenge
  • to solve 1 or 2 problems prepared by different business domains of HUAWEI
  • to win amazing prizes from HUAWEI!

As a special prize, HUAWEI together with ICPC Foundation will provide the travel trip to the 46th Annual ICPC World Finals in a guest role to the 2 winners (1 winner for each problem)!

Everyone is welcome to participate. It is an individual competition. ICPC 2022 Online Challenge powered by HUAWEI (open to the public): September 15 — September 30, 2022, 00:00 UTC (UTC+0)

This time HUAWEI has prepared 2 challenging tasks for you from different business domains – Data Communication and Cloud.

You are free to choose which problem you would like to solve, and you are also welcome to solve both problems, but please remember the total runtime of both rounds, which start simultaneously, is 15 days only. We hope you'll enjoy this complex yet very exciting Challenge!

Each problem will have its own scoreboard and its own prize fund, so this is a unique chance for you to win double prizes for two solved problems!

Problem No 1: Optimal graph partitioning for fast routing

This problem comes from HUAWEI’s Data Communication business domain, in which routing algorithms have always been a critical issue. In the future, as more and more communication devices are connected to networks, data communication will face an interconnected network formed by ultra-large-scale network devices.

In this challenge, data communication experts of HUAWEI will provide you several network topologies. By dividing them into abstract domains, you need to scale down these topologies and enable quick route calculation, so that fast route convergence can be implemented on large-scale networks. Domain division must address the optimal routing and network scale constraints, so a routing algorithm that effectively divides domains while also meeting these constraints is the core of the algorithm design.

REGISTER

Problem No 2: Topology-Aware VM Placement

This problem comes from another HUAWEI’s business domain – Huawei Cloud. To win the competition in cloud computing market, major cloud service providers are focusing on improving the utilization of cloud resources, as this will allow to reduce the cost of cloud services. It is estimated that even a 1% increase in cloud service resource utilization can save millions of dollars in costs. The optimization of resource utilization, in turn, requires the development of advanced algorithms and technologies for cloud resource management.

The virtual machine (VM) placement algorithm considered in this contest is one of these critical algorithms, which is used to select a physical machine for running a user VM. Since VM requests arrive dynamically, this algorithm works in online fashion. The main goal is to maximize the number of successfully placed VMs. As the algorithm runs on a resource pool of fixed size the more requests are allocated, the less resources are wasted and the more resource efficient is the algorithm. A secondary goal is to maximize the number of VMs placed without violation of additional soft constraints, as it improves the cloud user experience.

Hello, Codeforces!

Welcome to the ICPC Communication Routing Challenge powered by Huawei!

This challenge edition is very special, as it will be happening in conjunction with the ICPC World Finals! For those who are not participating in the finals — ICPC and Codeforces are offering a unique chance to compete during a 5-day Challenge Marathon and win amazing prizes from Huawei!

ICPC Challenge Marathon (open to public, unrated): October 9-14, 2021, 00:00 UTC:

REGISTER

This time we’re delighted to provide you with a future-oriented topic – routing algorithms for next-generation communication. During this Challenge we will provide you with a super-large inter-satellite optical network to properly plan message paths, to reduce communication latency and improve resource utilization. However, finding the optimal path in a network with limited resources is an NP-hard problem. Considering the physical constraints of optics and circuits, our algorithm faces greater technical challenges:

  • How can we model and abstract device constraints and design algorithms in the most appropriate way?
  • Is there an algorithm that takes almost the same time to calculate routes as the network scale increases?
  • Is there any way to obtain the theoretical optimal solution in a short period for ultra-large networks?

We hope that these satellite communications challenge questions can help you understand the problems that Huawei's software algorithm researchers face every day. All the best!!!

My name is Fadi Ashy I’m a Game Programmer and a senior software engineering student at Al-Baath University from Syria. ACM was a big part of my life through college. I was a contestant for three years reaching my country’s final “SCPC” three times and for the fourth year, I went to be an organizer for our local and country’s Contest. Codeforces was a huge player in my journey solving around 300+ problems in different areas of the sea of Computer Programming.

My story to the ICPC started when I logged in my e-mail one day and came across a contest hosted by the ICPC in my newsletter for a chance to win a trip to the ICPC Finals in Beijing by sharing a small video about yourself in the ICPC. So I got my camera and posted my video on YouTube and waited for the results and finally, I got accepted and even more on that I got the chance to work with the ICPC News team on the contest hall.

My preparations for the ICPC went fine getting all the paperwork. Sometimes it is problems to attend because of where you live. I faced some basic problems that everyone had while living in Syria. I got a problem paying for the visa and my ticket because there was no online payment and then I got my visa because it was delayed about 4 days before the travel time, but with some really awesome people from the ACPC and SCPC helped me a lot.

After all the preparations have been done we started a 24 hours trip from my hometown in Syria all the way to Beijing crossing more than 3 countries using buses and planes. It was one of the longest trips I’ve ever had, but the end of it was one of the greatest cities on earth.

When we arrived, I was stunned by how many people are there in the ICPC. I’m used to participating and organizing small events and not something this big. But I realized something: more people sometimes means more fun. I can’t explain how amazing it was to share your story and get to meet a lot of people from so many countries around the world, and also being in the geekiest community ever. All the talks and the conversation we shared was about computer programing and some cool stuff happening in that field. I also got the chance to meet the greatest managing team ever and had a chance to meet people that were known to me in just a small name at the end of an e-mail.

But finally, I got to meet the ICPC News team. I got my bag and fired up my laptop and waited for some task to help in with. Working on some photos using Photoshop and working on small Ideas and even helping in the live stream on the official page. What I loved the most about the team is how professional they are. And yeah, I used a mac for the first time and it isn’t that good… mmm maybe I’m windows fanboy, I don’t know.

And as I mentioned before, a big number of people also need an awesome huge place to host them all and Peking University is spectacular, amazing Campus, amazing students and I can’t really describe the contest hall. I think the photos should describe it all.

Maybe I have more fun working than really having fun, but the ICPC is full of fun activities either with the teams and friends, or you can ditch all ICPC stuff and go walking in beautiful Beijing. We even got a chance for an awesome trip to visit and climb the Great Wall of China. One piece of advice if you’ll ever go there and you’re a full-time programmer and you’re not used to doing a lot of sports. Are you thinking DON’T climb it just stay on the bus and take a nap. Is it worth it? Kind of: the view from up there is a crazy and an awesome view and you can buy a medal with your name carved on it to always remember that hard time that left you unable to walk for about half a day afterward.

More than 300,000 students competed worldwide in local and regional events with one aim — to participate in World Finals, this year hosted by Peking University in China. And today we will see who will become the world champion!

A total of 140 teams of three students will face about 12 difficult problems (we don't know the number until the problem set is released!). They will have 5 hours to solve the problems.

Although the contest itself takes 5 hours only, the whole event takes 5 days. So, what is going on during these days?

Through the registration evening, each team was given different color shirt and their badges, as well as other goodies like a backpack and a cute stuffed panda bear. We took photos and videos of each team so we can share about them on various social media.

Monday began with JetBrains TechTrek Presentation and a really fun sponsor showcase with games and activities. Contestants could participate in many things — they could try writing Chinese characters, playing traditional Chinese games or instruments, try sports in VR and more... The day was ended with a stunning concert of both traditional and contemporary Chinese music from Peking University, including some original compositions.

On Tuesday we were amazed by The Giant Wall of China. That day we become true men because the Chinese saying is that one is not fully human until he climbs the Great Wall. It was surprisingly steep. Hundreds of people from 6 continents climbed it and had amazing views of the mountains.

The afternoon was all about the opening ceremony, which had speeches, awards for many wonderful people and a presentation of all the teams, interlaced with cultural performances.

Wednesday was an important dress rehearsal. The program is similar to the competition day. It lets everyone find issues so the finals on Thursday can run as smoothly as possible. There are always some technical issues, problems with logging in, printers, etc., but they all got worked out. In the afternoon, contestants had a rest, enjoy a sponsors' ChillZone with games and do the last preparations for the tomorrow's contest.

140 teams participate in world finals. But there are many other people standing behind scenes — coaches, organizers, judges, ICPC teams (News, Services,...) and many other volunteers, totalling in about 1000 people!

The ACM ICPC world finals aren't only about competing. It is also about meeting with great programmers from all around the world, encountering other cultures and sharing the joy of programming. For me, this event is truly awesome and fun to be part of!
