Is that officially confirmed somewhere that 6 teams are going from CERC region? During onsite competition it was said that first 3 teams are going for sure and next 3 teams will go very likely, but that was not confirmed at that time.

Surely we have many strong teams in that board, however for sure many are still missing. Probably some of them didn't have their regionals yet. Afair, jqdai0815, YuukaKazami, vfleaking is an actual team this year and I would say that this team is this year's favorite (judging from last contests, maybe even jqdai0815 alone will be able to win :P). What are other strong teams that will very likely qualify to WF, but are missing here?

In here, I only put the teams that I know for sure are going to WF. So yes, many strong teams are missing here, especially in Asia.

At the moment, mostly all regionals in Asia have finished, but:

    1. We have no idea how many teams can qualify from each regionals.
    2. Strong universities have many teams qualified to WF and the univ will select their team.

We will need to wait a bit until Asia's results are finalized. But with all the excitement I could not refrain myself from creating such post, so it came out a bit early.

Can you tell us more about how finalists are chosen in Asia? I've heard that teams are allowed to participate in several regional contests, and universities are the ones actually choosing finalists. How did it happen that the process is so special in this region?

Yes, in Asia we have different rules. It is decided by Asia director. I'm not 100% sure if this year rule is same as last year, but last year it goes like this:

        1. All last year medalist go to WF. i.e. (in case rule does not change) Univ of Tokyo, Tsinghua, Peking, SJTU, Korea Univ go to WF.

        2. Asia is divided into 3 main parts (In each part, there will be some regionals)

          • China, Hong Kong, ...: has 5-6 regionals this year
          • Asia Pacific (Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia...): has 8-9 regionals this year.
          • India, Bangladesh, Iran...
        3. A team can participate in at most 2 regionals in his part. Then some magical constant decides who can qualify. Usually from each regional top 2-3 qualify.

In case (1) or if a univ has more than one team qualifying from different regionals, the university decides who go to WF.

Thus, in my post, for Asia, at the moment, there are only teams that were #1 in at least 1 regional.

But what's the logic behind it? Why are the rules so informal only for Asia?

We had a NEERC regional contest a week ago, there was an unclear situation about some team that cheated, and since last weekend there is a very active discussion of NEERC jury's actions in a corresponding topic on Codeforces. I can't even imagine how much flame there would be if NEERC also had such "magic" rules.

The reason for having many regionals is that there are many small / developing in Asia and it is not easy for everyone to go around (passport issues + cost).

This lead to the issue that 1 university can go to many different regionals (e.g. SJTU, Peking go everywhere in Asia Pacific). But there is no clear way to restrict which regional contest a university can go to (what regional should a country not hosting ACM regional go to?).

And since every university can go anywhere. How to define quota for each regional? The answer that the Asia director came up with is magical constant for regionals and university selection.

Huh, cheating on ACMs o_0. It probably wouldn't be polite if we reveal their names (if they are not public yet), but out of curiosity, what they did? Called to Petr, searched through Google on phone in toilet :P? (I don't know whether that could be relevant, but please do not spoil problems :)

The NEERC is held in several places simultaneously, on one of the sites there was (probably) some kind of cheating initiated by local organizing staff to make sure the team of an organizing university passes to the Finals. I say probably because there was no official commentary by the NEERC jury, but the team was disqualified, and their results were removed from the official site in few days after the contest.

This caused a very active discussion that you can find here. Let's not discuss it here since it is pretty off-topic. The link above is in Russian, but I'm sure that you can understand the most of the meaning using Google Translate (Russian and Polish are pretty easy to translate from one to another). Beware of problem spoilers :)

"Strong universities have many teams qualified to WF and the univ will select their team." dafuq o_0? So regionals are just a suggestion to universities in Asia? In CERC if team is not best on CERC within its university then it is not going to WF even though it may have solved more problems then some other team that qualified. ACM is such a great contest, but those rules of qualifying (at most 2 participations, at most 1 team from uni, magic and nonpublic constants out of nowhere and now this) are so weird -_-

I think you can read my above comment for clarification. As an example, this year National Taiwan University have:

        1. |_0|_1 won Phuket regional
        2. bcw0x1bd2 is #2 at Taipei and #2 at Singapore.

So NTU Taiwan has 2 teams qualifying to WF, and the univ can decide who go to WF.

So it is theoretically possible that you'll win every single contest you participate in, but your university will send a different team to WF (just because people who are making that decision don't like you for some reason, or because other team had some nice not related to ACM ICPC reasons)?

That's not how sport works. And it is hard to consider ICPC as a sport activity while it don't even have strict rules describing criteria of picking best teams.

And we are waiting for formulas describing distribution of WF slots among regions for a long time already...

Yes, theoretically it is possible. A lot of other things are possible under Asia rules :) There are many special details in rules, that I did not cover here.

I don't like Asia rules either. Few years ago there was even announcement of following rule that only affect Hong Kong and Singapore: that only 1 team from these 2 countries can go to WF. Anw, in the end the rule was not even applied, but it motivated Singapore to host ACM regional this year.

As far as I know, NTU will hold a final contest to decide who can go to WF. Rules in Asia are really strange, and I think that's why China decide to hold EC-final this year. However, it's much harder to hold a final contest in Asia Pacific Region...

There will be some slots for EC-final, but I'm not sure how many. I didn't read the rule carefully, but it seems like teams who got 1st and 2nd place in regional will still earn a slot, and the remaining slots will be distributed according to EC-final.

Edit: I don't know why they are not in the team list either, maybe you can ask YuukaKazami.

True. The PP subregion under representation rule increases the difficulty to determine which teams will be qualified. The constants for the repeated teams and for the foreign teams are always magical. I hope there will be a predetermined algorithm to distribute the slots in PP subregion.

I guess a similar question I have, is given how strong the team is, is training together a lot really necessary? I do not know much about how things work at the highest level of competition but it seems that a team with 3 elite people like this would be fine with just remotely training a bit, but maybe I am way off on this?

Yes, it is. I was about to also tell similar thing, that they will greatly perform even without any training together, but there are few issues:

          1) No matter what level you are at, training together greatly increases ability to perform well altogether. Teammates should know their strong and weak sides to wisely distribute problems, in case of doubt ask appropriate teammate, know how different situations psychologically affect every member and how to deal with this etc.

          2) IT'S NOT FUN THAT WAY! Of course training together is crucial to get most fun out of that competition. Of course performing well on finals is a main goal, however without training together it is not that worthful. Of course competing is still more fun than not competing, however we should remember that ... ->

          3) Number of participations in WF is limited to 2, which in case of guys which are allowed to choose, encourages to choose which finals will you participate in, in order to maximize fun/results.

You have to be totally confident about beating any opponent in order to not even prepare for competition (and that's what you suggested here) :) I think it works same way in any sport.

I have told them that it when we formed this team.

Actually I have discussed with jqdai0815 about changing another teammate, but it seems he doesn't want to go to WF this year...

And what about next season? Would you participate in ACM? Your team is so strong that, in my opinion, there are many people, who are curious about this question.

I'm also a visiting student at MIT last and next semester (and also hence can not train for WF), but I don't have the luxury of being able to wait another year :( --> shitty Skype trainings.

Btw, does anyone have an advice on training when being away from your teammates?

The team listed for Carnegie Mellon University is correct, but... I happened to notice nobody left a comment with it. How did you figure out who was on the team? Just poking around in the gym for a "CMU1"?

I ask because I was going to provide it, but then was surprised to find that it was already here!

It demands some effort to do this that way (firstly I tried searching on contest's local page but found nothing), however that is one possible way: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=site%3Acodeforces.com+CMU1

Just curious, why Poor Man's Shield? I have seen names like Daedalus, Radiance (powerful items) or +1 ironwood branch (extremely basic one), but a mediocre item somewhere in between doesn't seem to sound that cool :P
