You know there was some shit on Turkey, some times ago. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_Turkish_coup_d%27%C3%A9tat_attempt

Because of that, we won't participate this year as a team. But some of us think we can participate without coach. Do you know any idea about it? Can we participate without coach? We send e-mail to IOI but we didn't get a reply yet.

Thanks for any idea.

I'm really sorry to hear that :(. I've enjoyed watching Turkey's ascension in programming contests and was looking forward to your results this year. Hopefully things can still change.

Still, I'm curious, how exactly did the coup attempt affect the country's participation in IOI? Has this happened with other Olympiads and similar activities?

Actually it's just some shit. People can go abroad. Everything is fine in Turkey, but they just say we won't participate. ICHO team didn't go to contest, too. IBO team participated in first day but didn't participate on second day and returned to Turkey :(

There is a possibility that some guy on our team can't come because his trial exams are close to IOI and his school won't let him go.

I'm not sure about the situation now but I hope he gets to go......

UPD : He confirmed with me that he isn't allowed to go. This means that our team will consist of only 3 people. :'(

Also, sorry to hear that you guys can't participate as a team. Hopefully you guys get to go in the end!

Lolwut. Another case of politics fucking up contests.

Can we participate without coach?

That's an interesting question. I can go with you as a coach, would anyone notice? :D

I checked the rules, it says a delegation must have a Delegation Leader who should be able to translate and know enough about programming / the contest to be useful when something goes wrong. So while you probably can't participate without a coach, you can get someone to go with you.

Alternatively, you can use the approach "act first, ask questions later". I suppose the participation fee has been paid; if you have visas, it's easy to go, if you have flight reservations, it's even easier.

You now there was some shit on Turkey, some times ago.

And I posted about it here :D

Actually translation isn't a problem. But I don't know about "Can we participate?". And can we get someone to go with us? Because as I know we can't register in this time. We haven't visas and flight tickets but, I think we can handle this. The main problem is can IOI accept us in some way :(

Registration is something that should've been done long ago. If your team hasn't been registered yet (incl. participation fee), that's a bigger problem than the failed coup's.

All the data for IOI 2016 on stats.ioinformatics.org have been pulled from the IOI registration system. Barring any updates last week, all the people there have been registered.

I'm not in charge of making those decisions for the IOI, but I know the people who do, and they will definitely be, first and foremost, on the contestants' side. If there is a solution, hopefully they'll be able to find it. Whom did you e-mail? If you didn't do so yet, try e-mailing the whole IOI International Committee: ioi-ic at lists.ioinformatics.org.

Here's a bunch of issues that will probably need to be resolved somehow.

First and foremost, legitimacy. Are you really the contestants who qualified from your country by winning a national competition, or are you just random people? The IOI knows about your local organization and it would certainly be good to hear from them that you are really the ones who qualified this year. (BTW, who exactly are the "they" who said that you won't participate? Your coaches, or someone in the government?)

Second, responsibility. If some of you aren't legally adults, who will be responsible for you during your travel and the IOI?

Good luck!

We are the ones who selected for team. We had registered to IOI system, and everthing was fine. Then some our coach and some TUBITAK(Olympiad stuffs) people said we won't participate.

And some of us aren't adults but, it isn't a problem for travelling or something. But is it a problem for IOI, do we need someone whose is responsible for us? It's the main question I wanted to learn :(

From the protocol of the meeting of the International Committee on February 16th:

Yandex wants to run the IOI online simultaneously one hour after the contest begins. It means they must have the test data the night before. The proposal is that it is sent after quarantine. This is extending trust beyond the leaders to Yandex. Is the IC in favour?

Assuming any technical issues can be sorted: For 7, against 0

Considering the positive vote, it seems that an online version will indeed be running. However, it will certainly be regarded as unofficial, and I am not sure if your universities would be willing to honour its results.

As for official remote participation, this is something that was last discussed (as far as I know) during the General Assembly meeting in July 2015 (see section 29, Offsite Participation). It appears that preparation for a possibility of offsite participation in 2017 has been underway since 2014, and is still under heavy debate. I doubt that it could be implemented in 2016 on such short notice.

Ad official/semi-official offsite participation: NO unless it's possible to quarantine people at home; that's necessary if the Yandex version is insufficient.

There are cheap flights from Stambul to Kazan (app. 500$ for a return flight), visas aren't expensive too (should be around 100$, at least it is the price in Poland).

I really don't understand reasons for this. Are you banned from representing your country? If so, then go as "representation of stateless Turkish students".

I don't believe that normal citizens are banned from travelling, thus if it is a problem only for your leaders, go without them.

Maybe try to contact some higher institutions and say that you are able to pay for the trip.

I really feel sorry for you. Science should be separated from politics.

My english isn't enough to tell the situation but let me try.

In Turkey TUBITAK does all the scientific stuff, science olympiads too. They said we won't participate this year. So we tried to participate as contestants.

I talked to IOI committee, they accepted us without coachs. They found a person who can be our leader in there, and they found a person who can translate tasks to Turkish. Everything was fine.

Then TUBITAK said they don't let us we can participate. At first the only problem was coach aren't able to go abroad. Than they didn't want us to participate.

So our coaches sent an e-mail to IOI committee that says like "We won't participate this year. Please don't accept our contestants". And IOI committee sent us a message that says they can't do anything.

So we won't participate as a Turkey team. And we won't participate without coachs. The IOI committee can't accept us now.

Thanks. Probably, IOI committe should listen our committe because they chose us, they have right to say "We won't participate this year as Turkish team." and they have right to say "Don't let them participate."

The ugly truth is why our committe sent this message to IOI? They should listen our government. As JohnPaulII said "Science should be seperated from politics."

Yeah, whatever. Except Turkish people everyone knows our country's fucked up'ness level. But 90% of Turkish people think we're living in the best country ever. "So we won't participate as a Turkey team. And we won't participate without coachs" [as a Turkey team]. I would guess that the next step here (which is something hinted at in JohnPaulII's post) would be an attempt to appeal to IOI committee to allow you to participate as independent contestants without any country affiliation, in a similar fashion to contestants from Kuwait at Olympic Games.

Although you would also have to consider consequences of this move as this could be considered hostile by some instances I suppose, so this might not be worth it in the long run. Also, I guess this is only possible from personal funds, which might get quite large this close to IOI.

Then I'd look for another country to represent next year (it's not that hard, Slovak contestants that didn't make the Slovak selection have been doing it casually). But, well, it's not my life and Turkey will do worse shit in the future.

Than they didn't want us to participate.

I never used the current year shit argument. Show me where I did, link to the post where I did. Protip: you can't.

On the other hand, I am aware of people's own opinions about particular comedians, to which I provide my own opinion. In words: they think comedy = ridiculing people, as if laughing at someone and acting superior proves them wrong, which incredibly correlates with political agendas. I don't share that sense of humour (as opposed to making fun of everyone including ourselves equally like ED) and I'm free to think it's shit and express that opinion, but I'm not ridiculing animeshf or anyone else for liking it.

Your post is a Tu Quoque fallacy. Worse yet, a false Tu Quoque fallacy — you're accusing me of doing the same thing I'm accusing "comedians" of doing in an attempt to defend them (regardless of how intentional it is), while I am not doing that.

P.S. I know what this comment will get: many downvotes without rebuttal.

You're right, I can't. Because it's not explicit. It is heavily implied, in my opinion. Let me try to explain.

See the keyword here? "In my opinion". It is used to state that the following is my personal opinion and I do not expect anyone to change their opinion because of that. If you wanted to express your opinion, then I believe you haven't done the good job there. Right from the start, the phrase "pick one and only one" invites the original author to perform an action, which is indicative of not stating your opinion but to attempt to change others' opinions. You then proceed to aggressively (without any comments about them, just a link dump) post images and links to prove your point. So in my eyes, that post looks like a classic example of "you're wrong, here's why" post.

Hence my reply. Since you've clarified that you were simply stating your own opinion, I apologize if my reply offended you. Just remember that when stating one's opinion, it seems obvious to the writer that he is doing so, and as a result the end product might end up as being a lot more aggressive than originally intended. Perhaps you don't care about that, but then why bother with such a long reply?

P.S. I don't believe this is the right place to discuss this. If you would like to continue, let us do so in PM.

I'm not a fan of writing clarifications like "just my opinion everywhere", since it seems forced and most conversations deal with opinion as opposed to hard facts; instead, I assume that (which often allows a "well, this is just your opinion" response) unless the author explicitly claims Absolute Truth (you'd be surprised how many people worship science and declare theories as such).

I tend to have a very direct and often unpleasant posting style. Not really aggressive, I'm not writing my own versions of Navy Seal Copypasta (look it up :D), but I prefer to avoid self-censorship and say what I want to say. One anon wrote a few days ago that people seem like NPCs to him, like they're repeating the same rehearsed lines... Btw "pick one" is a common prase there.

Since you've clarified that you were simply stating your own opinion, I apologize if my reply offended you.

As per above, there's no need. I explained, you understood (hence why it's worth a long post), it's okay. If I can handle a gore thread, I can handle an argument :D

But I have to agree that the tendency of the left to cite their opinion as completely unquestionable facts is really disconcerting. Questioning them is almost the same as trying to debate religion sometimes.

There is some sort of purge right now in Turkey, a result of the failed coup d'état. It shouldn't take much longer, so I wouldn't worry about the next IOI or other olympiads. However, if I were a Turkish student, I would worry about my future life and definitely try to go to study abroad. Really guys, not going to IOI might be the least of your concerns. I am sure you know some historical facts about the Middle East region, such as situation in Iran after 1979.

Btw, if this attempt was a false flag, then Erdogan is quite a politician.

Totally irrelevant but some say next ioi will be more late than usual because iran is too hot in summer. Is this true or decided yet? Because it is a huge disadvantage to make it after university applies for some students.

    From IOI website:

"IOI2017 in Tehran(Iran) will be held from Friday 21st July till Friday 28th July, 2017."

Even if it would've been late (which it won't be), then I don't see how this creates any disadvantage. IOI Regulations clearly state that:

A Contestant is a student who was enrolled at a school for secondary education, in the Country they are representing, during the period September to December in the year before IOI’n, and is not older than twenty years on the 1st of July of the year of IOI’n.

So for eligibility purposes, it doesn't make any difference whether the IOI is in July or December (like it has been in 1997).

Still, I think problem might be in applying for universities. If medal in international olympiad would help you in recruiting, you cannot apply in the middle of the year (for instance, US college start in August/September). Moreover, in Poland there might be a problem with scholarships. Government want to conclude the school year after holiday's period is over, which is June — August. Of course, there might be some exceptions, but I believe that there are many more examples to keep IOI in July/August.

Even August is problem for our country. This year our 2 qualified students can't go to IOI.

The current date is also a problem because IOI intersects IMO.

Syrian team had hope until less than a month before the contest, and the team was already decided and registered. Australia didn't give them visa because in their opinion Syrian == terrorist -_-

Here we see many cases where the politics affects the talented students around the world. USA recently remove my country from the list of sponsoring terrorism, but were unjustly in it for a long time.
