Unfortunately, our government in the last day have finally made a decision not to go to the IOI this year because of political problems with Russia. Our team is very upset about this situation, because week ago we were sure, that we will participate.
Also I want to apologize to the people, whom I promised to exchange souvenirs. I'm really sorry about this situation. I have already bought it, but unfortunately we cann't go this year.
Anyway, it's left only one day to start, so good luck for everybody!
it's really so sad, after Turkey another huge country with a big accomplishments will not go to IOI
Science should be separated from politics.
Someone start a change.org campaign, appealing to the governments of the world.
The beginning of the end...
Very sad :(
It's really sad story, good luck Ukrainian team next year .
why they decided that late??
They are idiots, that only can say "Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the heroes!".
Yes, Russians can much more. For example, to expode dwelling building with people inside to increase Putin's rating.
(I am sorry for saying this in this site, but it's just an answer for uncorrect father(this) comment. It would be good if they BOTH will be erased.)
Because it's just some days since some provocations in Crimea (Russia and Ukraine still blame each other in that provocations).
WTF, seriously.
Another one? Srsly?
FFS
This shit is getting way out of hand.
Duude what the hell is wrong with the world
Same thing happened for Turkish IOI team. Hope this bad thing get stoped now (sorry for bad english)
Best IOI ever
On the bright side, contestants who actually make it will have an easier time getting medals because the Ukrainian and Turkish teams were so good XD
I'll take this as a compliment :(
It is a compliment! How else would you take it?
If things will continue in this way there's no USA team next year.
Is next IOI in Russia?
Not Russia, but relationship between USA and Iran isn't better
Ah, I see
Weren't they going to hold 2 separate IOIs because of Israel?
I don't think so. Their relationship is not that bad. American people can easily come to Iran right now (and I don't think that's gonna change).
Yeah, but still Iran does not allow entry to someone if there is an evidence he has ever visited Israel, right? And I think this is a potentially bigger problem.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visa_policy_of_Iran#Israel
I think that after this issue in Australia, IOI committee makes sure that host country won't make such things. They surely know that in 2007 there was IPhO in Iran and Israel wasn't invited due to some political or religious problems. (according to Quora)
WTF MF???
For god sake, why pupils and students must care about this political games?
We were in Kiev last year on KPI-Open and whole organisation was really nice even we're from Moscow. I hope MIPT team had same experience this year.
And I'm 100% sure Ukrainian pupils will have no problems in Kazan. It's really sad to see such decisions from big bosses.
Statutes of the International Physics Olympiads
§2 "No country may have its team excluded from participation on any political reasons resulting from political tensions, lack of diplomatic relations, lack of recognition of some country by the government of the organizing country, imposed embargoes and similar reasons. When difficulties preclude formal invitation of the team representing a country, students from such a country should be invited to participate as individuals. "
This is the kind of stuff that breaks people. Alongside the fact that Ukraine has sone delicate political problems, this "separation of interests" will only lead to less communication and more isolation (intelectually and mentality-wise). Because the educational system is so strongly tied to the political system, we get news like that. And the saddest part is that the only people who get to lose so much are the participants, who have prepared and made expectations and hoped for an interesting and fullfilling experience. Not to say that there might be people for which this is their last/only experience. Frankly, it breaks my heart.
Really sad. This has nothing to do with politics and yet decisions are so heavily influenced. Good luck to the Turkish and Ukrainians for next year.
