It is currently 4:50pm Pacific Time (at least when I started writing this), so a little over 7 hours until midnight (I think? My math skills are not great).

I seriously considered writing a CF blog arguing that New Year is completely arbitrary to see what kind of responses I got. This is something I do actually believe -- although the length of a year is defined based on actual measurements of our universe, I'm pretty sure the date for the New Year was just picked by some random powerful person (which, according to this Wikipedia article seems to be William the Conqueror) and therefore doesn't actually mean anything.

However I do celebrate the fact that a significant amount of people across the world have managed to agree on this (although probably with a significant amount of coercion involved, given that the person who decided this is literally named "the Conqueror"). I find it nice that even in these divisive times, there's still something that many people agree on even though it's completely arbitrary.

It's now 4:58pm Pacific Time and I will go practice USACO. Also there's a good chance I'm wrong on a lot of this stuff. My research consists of skimming part of a Wikipedia article for around 2 minutes.

So are all the cf color brackets, and basically anything people celebrate is arbitrary. Most people realize this, but no one cares. Happy new year!
