I think I won't be the only one who has depression from time to time. So, maybe CPs, with whom I would definitely have common things, can give me some advice on how you fight against depression and what you are doing while being depressed. I usually play chess, but it's not helping much.
Sorry for the not relevant blog about algorithms and competitions, but maybe fighting against yourself is not a less competitive thing.
a healthy mind in a healthy body
What do you mean exactly?
I guess to do physical exercise . Basically go out from home and chill for sometime. like running in the morning in fresh air is definelty worth it init ?
It seems to be a reasonable thought! But it's cold outside :(
Thank you both very much!
Im just a newbie and dont have any experience with depression either, but I'd still suggest you to do something for your physical fitness.
For whole last year I was locked in my room had every bit of pain, had lost interest in everything as soon as I started giving my body some time, everything improved. dosent need to be something big, even 15-20 minutes in fresh air or some small workout can help.
Thank you! I am going to try it.
try something new maybe watch a comedy movie
I have tested this, but it doesn't work very often. Anyway, thank you!
Usually when i am depressed i try to not be alone and go with friends or do something, sometimes i go to the gym or go for a walk it really help! Sometimes eating delicious food helps too :p
Yeah, being alone is mostly like hell. Thank you!
Take a break for 2-3days.Do nothing just explore your true self. Maybe watch some different type of content. Try to find the meaning of your life. It helps. Always remember that one day all of us will die. So, there is no point in being depressed for something you wanted. Instead be grateful for what you have and do thing you enjoy.
Thanks.
Always remember that one day all of us will die
It makes me even more depressed:) but I need to see things from a different perspective.
Thank you!
What you're referring to "depression" might or might not be a depression
If you feel like tired / pressured after went through a series of failure that makes you feel like shit, probably it's not a depression but it might be a burnout. If you're experiencing this, I would suggest to take some rest and break to refresh and clear your mind.
Clinical depression, on the other hand is more serious than that. It"s biologically also influenced from chemical imbalanced from our brain (and probably other factors as well that makes you feel like a failure). If this is the case, I would suggest to consult to a clinical psychologist / therapist
Have a nice day :)
Good point! Everyone should know this. But apart from a clinical psychologist or therapist, what can you suggest? (I consider clinical psychologists or therapists to be the absolute last resort.)
By the way, thank you!
Not saying I have any experience in dealing with depression, but I think you should consider therapy in a slightly better light. I'm not sure how it is in your place, but it is no longer the stigmatized treatment considered only for the insane back in the 60s. Most of us have come to acknowledged that everybody is somewhat fucked up, and that going to professionals to help us stay mentally healthy and happy is absolutely okay, and there's nothing wrong with that.
(Of course, I supposed going to therapy if you're a high school/university student might cause a lot of worry in parents as they will no doubt learn about it. But clinical depression is bad enough that making your parents worry about you should be a second concern.)
I've known... not a lot, but at least some people who have to fight against mental sicknesses of varying degrees. The worst victims have attempted suicide on certain occasions, and have undergo periods which (I think, I have not been through too many bad things) can be closely analogized with Hell. The others get off more lightly, but suffered considerably still, and I think there is almost no reason why one should accept such pain in their heart if help is available. Please contact a professional if you need help, thanks. At worst, you will slightly embarrass yourself. At best, you will save your parents from the pain of losing a child.
I will definitely consider your comment. Thank you very much, man!
Try Tinder. Might help :)
Doesn't work for boys my friend, it would really do the opposite of helping him :(
Yeah, Tinder was funny because of some users who put memes on their front photos. :) Thanks, both!
Or maybe you can try Linkedin. Because on Tinder, boys chat the girls and they ghosted you. In Linkedin, you can do the other way around
Thank you! But I don't know if it is a good idea.
For anyone trying to get to this BS, Please dont lol! you actually might end up in depression with this even if you dont have one right now xd.
I had a problem.
Then, I installed Tinder.
Now, I have two.
Try watching any new sport which you know nothing about and slowly and steadily you will start understanding the sport and even you'll start enjoying it. I tried this once it worked out very well for me. Just the fact that it is new and you know nothing about but if it's entertaining it will help surely.
Wow, I've never heard that before. It may be worth trying. Thanks!
While you're watching any sport just try to do few queries (best moments of formula 1 racing something of that sort) of that sport on youtube and watch few of the videos and stuff and rest the algorithm will take care , it will bring entertaining and thrilling moment of that sports to you and that's how you'll start enjoying it.
I think you just need a new distraction (hobby) to keep you entertaining I have also tried reading books on money, psychology, explore any new tech like blockchain, watch series, movies or sometimes talking to small children helps a lot ( how they think the world works will always make you laugh and even question yourself ). And if you heavily use social media (i.e even if more than 1 hr) I would suggest reduce the time of that so whenever you feel like you want to scroll instagram just replace it with any of the new habbits which you are trying to cultivate.
Yeah, understandable. I really appreciate your answer. Thank you very much! :)
which sport you chose?
It probably depends on the cause of the depression. what exactly is bothering you, you need to think about it. and try to think backwards. you have to live in the present and not think about it at all.anyway, I recommend you read it. Well, if you're too lazy to look at the video.
Thank you! It seems to be interesting. I hope it is helpful, too.
What's the reason for your depression?
It is always a hard question, and sometimes it is even harder to answer...
Memes, Friends, Big Bang Theory, Anime, The Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit, Civilization VI, not the tv-show friends, girlfriend/boyfriend, Codeforces!
Anime?
Fixed xd
I tried all these things :)) Anyway, Thank you!
Why not Friends?
My parents are psychology teachers so I asked them about depression, and here is what they recommended:
First, you should try finding the solutions by yourself, like searching on the internet.
Balance your life. Balance your emotions, do things you enjoy, get yourself some hobbies. Eat healthier, what you eat can affect your mood (more fruits and vegetables, I guess). Make sure to sleep enough, the best is to sleep about 8-9 hours a day. Do exercise regularly. I recommend you do breathing exercise (my personal experience).
Talk to somebody you trusted. Sometimes expressing your feelings to someone is the best way to overcome depression.
Meet a doctor or psychology expert if needed. They're the best people who can help you to cope with depression.
About me, I usually play Counter-Strike when I feel tired. Maybe you should try playing video games though :)
Thank you so much, you and your parents! These thoughts look like reasonable advice.
Depression is a serious issue. I think visiting a therapist might be a better idea than a blog.
Get a life.
Wow, why has no one ever told me those genius words before? :O
Get a life.
Just take a rope and be done with it. No one cares or will ever care about you anyways lmao
I dont know how to help you, but i will take that apple sir, thank you!
Now being serious, sometimes laughing makes it better.
Haha, thanks for trying to help me!
Eat fruits. Have some sunlight. Work for other's happiness. Have a pet or help animals. Talk to your parents. Seek some psychologist(it is not bad at all as medication and pyscho-therapy are different). Try some walk in nature.
I hope your answer will help me. Thank you, man!
Try to pause doing cp for some time (e.g : two weeks) and go for a hobby you may enjoy. I also recommend you to try any kind of physical exercise, it may help.
Thank you!
yrw :))
have secs
I have hours :)
I think he didn't mean seconds..
Chess is like 1) If you win, you play again with excitement. 2) If you lose, you wanna win so you play again.
Exactly! It's extremely addictive.
I think we all have different ways of coping with depression. For me it was playing football and gaming. I also read this amazing book "Can't hurt me". Maybe you can try that out. Try to socialise more to get your head off it. It will be okay. You are stronger than your depression.
I also read this amazing book "Can't hurt me"
I've never heard of it before, but I will find out what it is.
You are stronger than your depression.
I hope it's true. Thank you very much!
AC releases good hormones, for sure.
True, but not enough :) Anyway, thank you!
I have same problems
I hope you will get over it! Let's take all these kind people's advice.
Sign up for a boxing or mma class and forget about depression forever. Current male generation is transforming into something unknown to the nature. Weak body, weak mind. Pathetic generation. When you surround yourself with the right kind of people, you will change yourself. There is also something magical in getting hit in the face. I don't really know how it works, but it sets you free. You understand that you was in the bubble before that, but after you get hit the whole world just opens up.
Sounds cool. Maybe that is what I need! Thank you, man!
But isn't getting punched in the face killing my brain cells?
Brain isn't simple as that. You don't get more intelligent by acquiring more neurons. You lose neurons every day since you're born, yet you don't get more stupid with time. Einstein could have had less neurons than you do now. You need to lose a humongous amount of neurons before you actually start noticing the degradation. You lose more neurons from alcohol, smoking, drugs, being overweight, undersleeping, anxiety, being not physically active, eating crap, breathing bad air, etc. Despite all of that having a detrimental effect on your brain you don't think too much about them, right? Yet people come up with certain idea that exactly this behavior will cause trouble in the long run, but ignore all of the other factors. The world is complicated, everything is influenced by lots of other things. You could find correlations and causual relationships bettween different factors. If you have found them, then don't be hypocritical and stick to your thesis and optimize all of the factors. On the other hand, if you ignore the majority of the factors, you might as well live with one more added factor.
You don't need to participate in boxing matches to have a positive impact. You just need a healthy sparring with huge gloves (16oz-18oz) and always use a head gear. If you encounter a bad sparring parter who hits you with full force, immediately stop it and tell the trainer that you don't enjoy it. Avoid ego boxers — they are themselves in a bad mental state. The only thing you could do is pity them, cause they'll suffer in the long run. Usually good trainers notice these ego boxers early on and they're kicked out from good gyms.
Let's say you have a lot of neurons and a lot of intelligence right now. What's the use of that if you can't enjoy your life? It's better to be stupid, but don't have depression and actually live a life. I don't know what's the meaning of life, but I guess it's not your ability to solve the hardest problems.
Thank you, man! I really appreciate your answer!
do sex
How to give more than one upvote?
Doing physical exercise and watching movies are themselves a challenge when you are going through depression I guess, because you might feel like doing nothing and simply lie down alone in your locked room. Watching movies can surely distract you for a small time but that of course is not a big help.
I think best thing you can do if you don't feel like doing anything is ask yourself "why am I depressed", "When did it all start?" because there must be some event or thought or someone else's action that might be the starting point of your depression and you can just try to figure out if that starting point can be reset or not.
If nothing can be done then figure out something that might make you happier in future, try achieving that and work for it.
I can understand it's easier to give advice but it might be really challenging to practically apply the advice. Good Luck, and just accept it you have to do it alone, all other's can do is give you advice and that's more than enough I guess.
Thank you! I really appreciate your thoughts.
At the beginning you have to stay away and take a break for a while. Replace it by doing Exercises. Believe me it will make a difference with you. Take a 15- to 30-minute brisk walk every day. Or you can dance, stretch, or do yoga. People who are depressed may not feel much like being active. But get yourself to do it anyway. If you need a push, ask a friend to do it with you. Getting any activity started helps boost your mood. Keep it going.
Also eat healthy foods. Some people with depression don't feel much like eating. Some may overeat. But what you eat can affect your mood and energy. So with depression, you need to be sure to eat right. For most people, that means plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Limit simple carbs and foods with added sugar. Don't go for too long without eating. Even if you don't feel hungry, eat something light and healthy.
My next advice is to not dwell on problems. It can feel good to talk through a problem with a caring friend. But depression can lead people to complain, blame, and rehash problems too much. It can keep you focused on what's wrong. It's OK to air your thoughts and feelings with people who care. But don't let problems be all you talk about. Talk about good things too. This can help your mood become more positive.
Express yourself. With depression, your creativity and sense of fun may seem blocked. But it can help to do things that get your creative juices flowing. Paint, draw, or doodle. Cook, or bake. Write, dance, or compose music. Chat with a friend or play with a pet. Find something to laugh about. Watch a funny movie. Do things you can enjoy. Even a little. That helps turn depression around.
Notice good things. Depression affects a person's view of things. Things can seem dismal, negative, and hopeless. To shift your view, make it a goal to notice 3 good things in every day. The more you notice what's good, the more good you will notice.
Most of all, if you're going through depression, show yourself some compassion and kindness. When you're going through a hard time, it helps to know you're not alone. Be patient with yourself. Depression takes time to heal. And I'm sure this period will pass as long as you want to end it. I hope my words were useful to help you. Good luck, Friend.
Man, thank you so much! I really loved your comment.
The tricky part about depression is that it deprives you from the motivation and joy of doing all the things the human mind can think of. So the answer won't probably be find a hobby, exercise, eat healthy, or practise more CP. From experience, I can say that distractions such as watching movies or playing video games don't help much. You probably won't even have the will or the necessary focus to finish the movie or the mission in the video game. I even remember watching a movie while I was depressed and it aggravated my situation because it was a little heavy emotionally. The only thing that helped me with depression was improving my social life. I left my high school and started my studies in a new place, and I met amazing people and got involved in an amazing environment that made me slowly get over my depressive thoughts. Sure, things like exercising, cold shower, healthy diet are helpful. But they don't change much on the long run. Something very important that I also did was facing my depressive thoughts. I spent hours thinking about the root causes that resulted in my depression. This probably won't help you with getting rid of them, but at least it will give you a fundamental understanding of your mental and emotional state. One thing I really advise you to do is THERAPY. Go seek the help of a professional. Speaking to a therapist can help you A LOT. (Don't you ever take pills or any kind of medicine to cure depression.) Also, speak to people. Express your feelings and your thoughts. You'll suffocate if you keep your thoughts enclosed in your mind. Speak to anyone you feel comfortable with. (I, for example, spoke to a friend and to my mom) I hope this helped. You got this! Everything will be over soon! I promise!
Wow, great thoughts. Thank you, man!
Mind that there are many people who like to help you! At least with advices. So people of this community not only compete in contests, create funny memes and write stupid comments, but also they are able to answer some inconvenient but important questions related to life.
Yeah, man. I really love the CF community.
The first thing is to make sure you are treating your body well (healthy food, some exercise, good sleep, and have nice human interactions), the mind works worse when you treat it bad.
Besides that what I've seen working is: People usually say to try different activities in hope your mind will start feeling different. However, there are some responses we all have and we can all bring out. Those are the feeling of fear and physical exhaustion. So there's always the option to do fighting sports or lots of physical labor. However if nothing helps, it's possible that's clinical depression, in which case the best is to seek a professional.
Yeah, that's what I think right now! Thank you.
I guess, you should consult some professional rather than random people online.

By the way, thank you!
U should try giving lessons to komarovian kids
Seek professional help and also play a team sport. It helped me.
